Sun, 3/19 - Sunday
Night at Kirby's, a Junebug Productions variety show (North Hollywood, CA)
I started working with a fantastic group of people that put on a variety show
called "Sunday Night at Kirby's" at the Hub Theatre in North Hollywood, CA.
We completed the first show Sun, 3/19, with three more scheduled performances
in April. I am responsible for the sound to the monitor wedge and two loudspeakers
to the audience. The setup includes three Yamaha speakers (one used as a wedge),
three SM58 microphones, and one Shure wireless microphone. We also plugged in
direct for a beautiful guitar song by Tracy Thomas. Although I don't have the
multitracking gear, I did record the show direct to a stereo track on DAT tape.
If you get a chance and are in the area I highly recommend seeing the show!
It's very entertaining, laughter abound, and free food/drinks afterward!

Thu-Sun, 3/9-11
- Pac-10 men's basketball tournament from Staples Center (Los Angeles,
CA)
Responsible for official quotes from participating teams' players. Thursday
included Stanford, Oregon State, USC, and Washington. Friday included Arizona
and Oregon, and Saturday was California.
Sun, 3/5 - Jamarama
Live! from the Terrace Theatre in Long Beach, CA
Jamarama Live! was
tracked for future broadcast by XM Radio. We recorded the the mic setup that
Jason and Chip setup on stage, which included a Shure Beta 52 (kick), KSM 32
(overheads), SM58 (drummer mic), wireless mics (vocals), Shure Beta 56A (bass
cabinet), SM57 (bass cabinet), a mixture of Direct Boxes for guitars, stand
up bass, etc. We also tracked a saw; yes, literally a saw! Other instruments
included a mandolin
(direct
box) and accordian (direct box). Additionally, we added a Shure SM81 overhead
drum mic, Electro-Voice RE-20 on another bass cabinet, and SM57s on the rack
and floor toms. For audience mics, we used two SM81s on stage left/right, mounted
two shotgun mics courtesy of the theatre about 20 feet high attached to the
speaker array, and then two SM57s horizontally boomed out of the alcoves midway
through the theatre on the ground floor.
In terms of the recording we took a 24-track split from the monitor board via a multi-pin connector directly into our mic pre's. We then ran that as usual to the Genex 9048 hard disk recorder and Tascam DA-78HR DAT tape backups. These were hooked up via DB25 multi-pin connectors (8 channels per cable). We used a rack-mounted Roland mixer to monitor the show.
The show also was recorded for video post production. Overall, the show was a success, though it seemed to have a lower turnout then what I would have expected. It was only about an hour and half set for 6+ hours of setup! The kids really enjoyed it and that's what it's all about right?!
