Night at Kirby's show #2 (North Hollywood, CA)
Sunday Night at Kirby's was another fantastic performance. Next week's April
9th show will sure to be a crowd pleaser as well, as the performance is really
developing smoothly. It keeps getting better and better. This week, Asa was
added to the bill, providing congas to back Jacole Kitchen's monologue. He also
performed a song he wrote, called "What You've Done."

- Recording Prince and his band (Hollywood Hills, CA)
I
was called into work Monday the 27th for an out-of-the-blue recording session
in the Hollywood Hills. It turned out to be Prince and his bandmates at a very
nice mansion :). We set up all the gear, which included Mark's Studer A-800
(yup, recorded to analog tape!), mic
preamps,
compressors, limiters, and Mackie digital console. I wish I could have taken
pictures but that would not have been kosher. We set up in a large room that
was adorned with purple velvet couches with matching pillows, etc. The elevator
was even velveted in purple, the logo, and "3121" logos were everywhere.
Monday was a full set-up day and recording commenced around 2 pm on Tuesday.
The setup was quite intricate because the full band was in the dance hall above
us. So we had to run the mic splitter snake from the band down to us in the
makeshift control room. The drum kit was mic'd with at least 10 microphones,
including a cowbell. We took direct and mic'd the amps for the bass and Prince's
guitar. We also did a stereo sub-mix of Morris' keyboards. The songs recorded,
which there were four of them, are for up and coming backing singer Tamar, with
co-writing and producing by Prince. Here's an article about a performance earlier
last month (Chicago
Sun-Times).
